Vithoba Temple - Pandharpur

Vithoba temple, Pandharpur sometimes also referred as Vitthala who is the form of Lord Krishna with his consort Rukmani and also considered as a local form of Vishnu. Vitthala Temple is the major centre of worship for the Vithoba-the Hindu deity.

Vithoba temple at Pandharpur in Maharastra, is located 65km away from Sholapur on the banks of river Bhimarathi. Vitthala is the sacred place and one of the most revered places as numerous devotees come and get the blessing of Vithoba.

Lord Vithoba's image is preserved in the impressive temple. The meaning of Vithoba is Father Vitthala. It is said that the name of Vitthala has been derived from the word Vishnu in Kannada.

Vithoba temple has six gates with its huge area. In this temple, the eastern temple is called as Namdev gate. The sanctum of this temple enshrines a standing picture of Vithoba also well-known as Pandhari or Panduranga.

Originally, it was allowed to touch the idol’s feet to all devotees but for precautionary measure, it is now restricted to touch the idol expect the priest for conducting rituals.
