Trimbakeshwar or Tryambakesvara or Trambakeshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and considered as an ancient temple of Hindu religion in Trimbak town, Nashik, Maharashtra, India. Tryambakeśvara temple is located at distance of 28 km from Nashik city and is one of twelve Jyotirlingas.
Trimbakeshwar temple is considered as source of river Godavari that originated from mountains of Brahmagiri and confluences the ocean near Rajahmudry. Kusavarta (kund). As it is a sacred shrine in Hinduism from ancient times, it is revered for bathing place for Hindus. In mid 18th century, Peshwa Balaji Bajirao had reconstructed this temple therefore the current views of the temple shows the results of his efforts.
Legend behind Trambakeshwar temple that saint (muni) Gautama and his wife Ahalya lived on the hill of Brahmagiri. Due to his holy virtue ness and devotion, he received a bottomless pit of grains and foods from Varuna. The other Saints were didn’t like this and they all felt jealous of his fate. Therefore they arranged for a cow to take entry in his granary and then caused it to die because Gautama tried to ward it off by a bunch of “Darbha grass”.
Therefore Rishi Gautama started worshiped Lord Shiva and requested to bring Maa Ganga down to make pure his hermitage and the premises. After his great worshipped, as Godavari, Ganga came down and then here Lord Shiva adopted an abode in mode or representation of Tryambaka.
The other Jyotirlingas in Maharastra are Grishneshwar and Bhimashankar.
